It’s been a while.
Welcome.
And thank you.
It’s me. Colin Douglas.
It’s been a little while. Buuuut…
At some point or another, you impacted me. For real. Like in a good way. You’ve influenced me and my life, altering the course of it for the better. Like, way better.
So thanks 🙂
Too often we live our thankless little lives, weaving in and out of the lives of those we once cared about, slowly drifting apart. There’s rarely a goodbye, no formal departing, no real ending… just a slow fade from our self-revolving lives. We never quite get the chance to express the impact people have had…
the impact you’ve had
People just… disappear.
So…
Well, this is me letting you know. Yeah, you. The impact you’ve had, I appreciate it. Some people have a tremendous impact, but often times it’s an unrequited comment or subtle piece of advice. No matter how small, if you’re reading this, thanks.
“Give them a rose while they’re still alive”
This newsletter serves to maintain better contact with you high-quality people in my life. You deserve more than a distant ‘like’ on Instagram. For one, it’s far too impersonal. For another, it doesn’t come remotely close to the genuine emotions I wish to express. This won’t solve it, but it’s a start.
Soooo…
This weird newsletter thing birthed from the idea of an old roommate, after backpacking in Colorado. He’s created something similar.
I’m here to say that I’m incredibly fortunate and grateful to be where I’m at in life. I’m unbelievably excited for where I’m going and you all played a large part in getting me here. Every single interaction played a role.
So What is This?
Every 6 months my goal is to provide a sort of biannual recap of my life. It’ll be adventures I’m on and things I’m up to, hoping you might offer some of the same.
Theory
The past 5 years made me realize that people are the best (and worst!) possible things that can happen in and to our lives. Relationships are everything.
(Harvard actually did a wicked study on how relationships affect our quality of life – Video | Article)
So I’m cultivating a sort of digital community with alllll the people who have made a difference. We all live our isolated little lives and sometimes it’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of.
A Short History
So these past couple of years I went to college in Colorado. I did some traveling. I also did a LOT of introspecting. This entire time I’ve just been trying to figure out this Life thing, and the right path, whatever the hell that looks like. The highs, the lows, they’re all part of the puzzle.
Out of college. Isolated. Independent. Seeking connection. Looking for direction. Trying to find obsessions. Total confusion. All of it. It’s all part of being human.
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards”
– Soren Kierkegaard
Initially, it felt like I was alone in these feelings, but the more I called friends and read and researched the more I began to think these feelings were a lot more universal than I initially thought.
It got me thinking. Whatever problems I or anyone else has, someone else has already experienced the same exact problems. Why reinvent the wheel?
I’ve got a more in-depth history available here.
The Answers or the Question
So while every 6 months I wish to involve you in a bit of my personal journey, each week I’m going to share interesting or useful things that I find across any and all outlets:
- Quotes
- Articles
- Advice
- Otherwise useful tidbits of information
I love learning and I love sharing, so this is just a way to share it with a lot of people that I care about.
(Largely inspired by the Tim Ferriss’ Newsletter and also kickass climber Mark Twight’s Higher Collective Consciousness)
I live in Las Vegas now with a real close friend. I rock climb, mountain bike, and am down to try just about anything once. I’m working on building a better life. I guess you all sort of (indirectly or directly) helped that happen the first time, so I wanted to lend a window into the journey for this go around. It’s about to get crazy.
Finality
Everyone else is dealing with the exact same shit. PLEASE share some of your own life with me. Email me back. Call. Hit me on Insta. I’d love to hear from you.
(I may not respond (yikes), but I will certainly read them)
Reach out. Seriously. Yeah, you.
Let me know how life’s going. Tell me what’s good. Enlighten me. Inspire me. We’re all trying to figure out the same things. Hopefully, I hear from you.
‘Til next time.
Colin.
