Book
“Other people’s biographies, books, and stories are literally instruction manuals on how to use our brain”
I’ve come to believe that relevant books may be the single greatest ROI on our time – monetarily, relationally, physically, emotionally. 50 years of experience can be distilled into a couple hours on our way to work. Incredible.
Guidance
Who are your idols? >> “Your idols give you insights to your values”
- Unknown
Unsure where I read this, but it’s transformed how I navigate the world. Identifying, listing, and literally writing down people who inspire me has helped me view the world through a more specific lens. No single person embodies the person I’d like to be, but combining attributes from tons of different people has helped me see what I value. Some people on the list:
- Bill Hicks
- George Carlin
- Steve Jobs
- Alex Volkanovski
- Sarah Blakely
- Yvon Chouinard
Relationship Advice
Identify your values: “Relationships thrive on values”
This helped me to understand what I value in platonic as well as romantic relationships. Our relationships last as long as they’re inline with our values and suffer when they aren’t. Values offered my a bit more clarity in relationships.
Antidote to Jealousy
“Do you want to actually be that person with all of their reactions, their desires, their family, their happiness level, their outlook on life, their self-image? If you’re not willing to do a wholesale, 24/7, 100 percent swap with who that person is, then there is no point in being jealous”
- Naval Ravikant
Have probably shared this quote multiple times by now, but I think of it on a weekly basis. I tend to feel jealous on more times than I’d like… But there are parts of these people I don’t want to be… That’s helped me be a little bit more grateful for me and embrace the parts of me that I value.
