Determining the effectiveness of our actions
“If I did this action 100 times would it get me to where I want to be?”
Source: Maybe Sahil Bloom
This notion helps me frame the effectiveness of my actions. It helps to determine if what I’m doing is actually helping or just getting lost in random rabbit holes. It’s also reminiscent of a take by James Clear’s idea is that ‘people in life judge you far greater for where you are rather than where you’re going’. Useful to know how other peoples’ perceptions affect our actions.
Long term thinking
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
James Clear
I’ve shared this quote before, but it is such a juicy idea that I find myself thinking of it often. It helps me to be critical of my daily actions… am I actually getting to where I want to go or just wanting to go there?
Temporary discomfort vs long term growth
How will I feel about this decision when I’m dying?
Anytime I’m making a difficult or uncomfortable decision, I do my best to think about how I will feel about it on my deathbed. It helps frame worries and reduce fear. If I’m terrified of some rock climb, I think about the regret I would feel next week for not trying. Most our discomforts are usually temporary.
A Book I’m Reading
Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles.
Ikigai, roughly translating to “a reason to live”, this book really makes me reflect on retirement and how I’d like to spend my time. There’s only so much of it, so how do we know what to spend it on. Methinks it’s the things that bring us joy, fulfillment, and our quality relationships.
A Peaceful Banger
Somewhere over the Rainbow by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole
Such a peaceful.
