You can’t time travel
“The quality of your craft directly correlates to how much time you spend on it”
Anytime I start a new hobby I realize this. I’m competitive and want to be the best at everything. But each time I pick up a new hobby – running, biking, jiu jitsu I am humbled by how much better others are.
There’s other ways to get good fast. Have a better coach and study from the best… but at some point there’s just no getting around the volume of raw Time you spend on something. It was also an antidote to not being upset that others are better. Often times they’re simply just devoting more time.
Get good fast
“If you want to speed up the learning rate, speed up the failure”
- Source: Unknown
Can’t remember where I stumbled across this but I really like it. Some things you just can’t afford to fail and you’ve got to be a student of whatever game you’re in. But 99% of the time there’s a way to train the failure in a low stakes environment. Fail in those environments to build the confidence.
Experience quote
“We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience”
John Dewey (did not create the Dewey decimal system)
Pretty sure we need to experience and the reflection to succeed. Each without the other is a recipe for failure. I certainly notice this with sports. I tend to be hyper-analytical. I want there to be an answer… a reason I messed up. Sometimes I just forget that these things take time to develop. Both experience and reflection, not 1 without the other.
Isolate yo’self
“Without great solitude no serious work is possible”
Pablo Picasso
Sometimes I am mind blown at how much of the time we pollute our minds with other peoples opinions. Instead of dissecting our own beliefs, we allow people (unqualified and unsubstantiated) to speak into our lives who don’t actually understand the full situation. It’s important to dissect our own thoughts and figure out if we actually believe these things or if others just tell us we should.
