The Strength of Weak Ties

‘Weak ties are surprisingly valuable’

Our closest relationships often have similar information and world views as us… that’s part of WHY they’re our closest relations. Dr. Meg Jay discusses the concept of weak ties in her book The Defining Decade.

Dr. Jay points out how tremendously useful weak ties Can be. Weak ties are acquaintances, colleagues, friends of friends and points out that these people can offer POVs wildly different from our own.

We largely get to choose the people we stay closest to. She points out that sometimes it’s those people we aren’t so close to that create the most monumental pivots in our lives.

A reminder to continue to invite weak ties.

Perspective on Life

On staying true to self

‘Ppl gonna talk shit about you and make fun of you regardless. You might as well let them do it while being yourself’

Marc Manson, Podcast on Writing

I find myself referencing this one more than I’d expect. The differing of opinions is inevitable. We can’t control what other people think of us, but we can control the being ourselves anyways. It seems like the times we yield to the opinions of other people is when we start living in a way that isn’t enjoyable… it’s living for people and not ourselves, but sometimes the alternative is painful.

Staying authentic is difficult.

MS, the Disease

One final thing. My buddy Jacob Rush is running the Bataan Memorial death March on March 16 as a fundraiser for MS society.

That’s an autoimmune disease and super uncommon to be diagnosed so young. I met this dude only for a few day trip in Utah with some buddies. Dude is super genuine and chooses to see the Choice and beauty in life despite (perhaps because of) having no clue when he could just keel over and be paralyzed by MS.

I’ve was inspired to see someone so adamant about living and doing things that matter, always sucks that this has to be the reason why. This is his story and Donation link for researching MS if you choose.
