Matthew Walker Sleep Doctor

Some Schleep Tips

  • Core body temp has to drop 2-3 degrees to fall asleep: Take a warm shower (Matthew Walker explains why)

  • Get some sunnnnn in the morning and sunset (offsets negative blue light effects per Daddy Hubby)

  • Routine! – The body’s internal clock follows specific pattern (biologically this has been through the sun) so maintaining rhythm (aka sleeping in less on weekends 🙁 can dramatically help (I write this on a Monday morning after sleeping in over the weekend and feel like doggy doo-doo)

  • Caffeine has a half life of 5-6 hours

  • Bright overhead lights can help wake you up

  • Warm lights at night, blue light in morning

  • Use your bed only for sleep and sex, that way you classically condition yourself to sleep as soon as you lay down. A simple association

  • Smaller meals close to bedtime – Large ones can cause indigestion

  • If on shift work, stay on same skej for at least 14 days including weekends, allowing your body to adapt to whatever schedule it is on

  • If we dramatically change our sleep skej (ie jetlag or stay up until 2 AM on the weekends), our bodies can only catch up ~1 hour each day

  • We have natural dips in energy sometime in the afternoon, some people opt to take naps. Matthew Walker says roughly 6-7 hours after is your natural sleep time

  • Night owl and morning lark are legit – Everyone has natural times where they feel most awake. **~25% are night owls and ~25% are morning larks**. The rest are somewhere in between. BUT lots of people think they’re night owls simply because they don’t get sunlight early in the day, per Daddy Hubby

  • 2 hour episode can be found on the YouTubes

  • Sleep Expert Matthew Walker also sends out Newsletter, though fair warning I haven’t tried it myself, I’d rather watch videos

A Wild Sleep Statistic

There’s ~24% increase in heart attacks the Monday that we lose an hour due to Daylight savings.

Interestingly, there’s also ~21% decrease when we gain an hour.

Thought Experiment

Do blind people still close their eyes when they get sleepy?

## Some Thoughts on Art

The differences in Expression of Art vs Interpretation of Art

An author, artist, painter, or songwriter can be in a totally wildly different headspace during the creation of art, but if their music or artwork makes us feel understood, that’s the emotion we connect to.

Great movies, photos, and music do the same thing: Makes us think or feel understood. Two people can be listening to the exact same song. One feels ecstatic while the other wants to cry, and somehow both still feel connected. It’s an incredible characteristic about music.
